Our History

In 1968 Mickey purchased her first Siberian Husky from Ray Ackers of Doonauk's Kennels and, being a "show" quality dog, attended her first show at the Ladie's Dog Club.  As we all know, the nerves and jitters of going to your first dog show can be nauseating so upon her arrival at the show, Mickey stayed close to the ring entrance so as not to miss anything.  While waiting there she noticed two ladies sitting at ring side in conversation and shortly one of them got up and approached her.  Learning later that this lady was known for her rather "direct" approach, she proceeded to tell Mickey that "she hoped I wasn't going to show that dog because he had a tight tail which was incorrect for the breed"
Thus, Mickey was formerly introduced to one of the great foundations of our breed, Peggy Koehler of Alakazan Kennels.  Surely noticing the look of shock on Mickey's face, the other lady approached her and in a very kind and friendly way asked her where she got her dog from and if she knew who he was out of.  Upon being told who the sire and dam was, the other grand lady of Siberians, Lorna Demidoff of Monadnock Kennels smiled and informed Peggy that the dog was out of one of the Alakazan sires!.  From that point on Mickey knew that that this kind and gentle lady, Lorna Demidoff, would be a great influence on her and became her mentor and friend.  The dog she had that day eventually moved in with Mickey's parents.

Between 1968 and 1970, Mickey met Frank Polimeni and they were married in early 1970, eventually moving to California.  Their decision to add a dog to their family came about when Frank accepted a position with Lockheed which was to send him to the Middle East.  Feeling that Mickey would need some company Frank decided that they should get a Siberian Husky as he had always loved and admired their beauty and of course those blue eyes!  Obtaining "their" first Siberian from a breeder ultimately turned into a sad event as the dog began acting strange after a few months and begun having seizures.  Not knowing about Epilepsy in dogs at the time, the heartbreaking decision was made to have the dog put to sleep.  Being both heartbroken and feeling the emptiness in their home a search was begun for another Siberian and soon a bitch was brought home from Lou Richardson's S-K-Mo Kennels.

In the meantime, Mickey had continued a friendship with Lorna and soon after the acquisition of the S-K-Mo bitch Lorna referred us to L. Stewart Cochran of Amchitka Kennels as he had a litter out of a bitch that they both co-owned.  Well, when that puppy stepped off the plane we thought he was the most beautiful Siberian in the world and off we went to our first SHCA National up in Northern California.  Well, as we all know not every dog is a "show" dog and with both Lorna and Stewarts approval, the dog was retired and spent the rest of his life doing what they were bred to do . . . . . . running on a pleasure team.  At this time, Lorna suggested that we breed our S-K-Mo bitch to our original Doonauk dog which we did and kept our first homebred, a bitch named Poli's Rontu Scootabout, which began what is known today as Poli Siberians.

We again turned to Lorna for advice and at her suggestion our homebred bitch was bred to Monadnock's Artvic Akela and produced 4 puppies.  Little did we know that those cute puppies in the whelping box would have a major impact on our kennel.  Three of the four dogs finished their Championships, one of those being Am/Mex/Int. Ch. Poli's Toka Tu.  Toka was owner handled and completed his American championship with three 5 point majors, his Mexican championship was obtained in four shows.  We had the honor and pleasure of Toka being ranked in the top five in the country entirely owner-handled.  We then jumped in with both feet and through the years have taught conformation handling classes, junior showmanship and professionally handled many breeds.

After a hiatus for a few years due to Mickey's cancer, today she is a survivor and so is Poli Siberians.  We remain a small kennel which is dedicated to the preservation of the "dogs of old" with a very limited breeding program.  We are both AKC licensed judges and hold offices in the Cabrillo Kennel Club and the Camino Real Siberian Husky Club and are members of the SHCA.  In keeping with the "mentoring" that Lorna instilled upon us, Poli Siberians mentors newcomers to the breed and participate in breed and education seminars to judges and those interested in the Siberian Husky.
